Ann C. Estabrook

December 18, 1928 — August 30, 2016

Ann C. Estabrook passed away on August 30, 2016, peacefully at the home of her daughter in Akron, OH, surrounded by family and friends. Ann's memory will be cherished by daughter Susan Kolarik (Pam Reid), sons Ken Estabrook (Linde Ghere) and Jim Estabrook (Alicia Guill). She will be greatly missed by grandchildren Jen and Christina Kolarik; Courtney Breuler; Michael, Josh, Joe, Jason, Aurora, Haven, and Jacob Estabrook; sister Danna Reid; and numerous other family and friends. In addition to her husband Bill, Ann was preceded in death by her daughter, Christine; her parents, Maggie and James Cooke; and sisters Juanita Scott, Bonnie Wright, Marie Pierce, Trula Duenas, and Dot Lee.

Born in 1928 in Maynardville, TN, Ann was a long-time resident of Danville, VA. After attending Lincoln Memorial University, Ann moved to Washington, D.C. with three of her sisters to work for the FBI. There she met her husband, Bill, with whom she shared adventures for 40 years. Shortly after marrying, they moved to Germany, where Bill served our country as a photographer for the Air Force. Following their return stateside, Ann created warm, welcoming homes and strong friendships wherever they moved throughout Bill's career with the JC Penney Co. They were always strongly active and faithful members of the Baptist church, lastly being members of West Main Baptist Church in Danville. Wherever they went, church created a sense of home and community for them, as they were often far from the family and friends whom they loved so much. From 1981 to 2009, Ann was best known for owning and managing the Estabrook's Hallmark Shops in Danville and Vinton with her husband, Bill, continuing after he died in 1990. She spent the last year and a half living with her daughter and daughter-in-law in Akron, where she was adopted by their church family at Fairlawn-West United Church of Christ, and by most everyone else who met her.

Over the years, Ann enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, and other pastimes for relaxation. She was wonderful about staying in touch with letters and cards. While reluctant to give unsolicited advice, Ann had a tendency to clip out and mail articles that she felt would be pertinent to the betterment of our lives.

Ann was laid to rest in Plymouth, NH next to her husband during a family graveside service on September 3. A memorial service will be held at Fairlawn-West United Church of Christ on Sunday, September 18. Calling hours will be 1:00 p.m. followed by the service at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Ann's name to either Fairlawn-West United Church of Christ, 2095 West Market St., Akron, OH 44313, or Danville Lifesaving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.
