Shirley J. Custer (Fain) passed away on October 28, 2021. She was born in Akron on July 10, 1932 and lived in Akron her entire life.
She was preceded in death by parents, George H. and Florence Fain; brothers, George (Betty) Fain and Ronald (Rita) Fain, both from Helen, Georgia; sister, Doris Elliott; and infant son, Ronald Sheridan Custer.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn. They were married on November 18, 1950. She is also survived by her sons, Jeffrey A. (Debbi) Custer and Douglas S. (Christine) Custer, both from Ohio; her much loved and loving grandchildren, Rachel (Rich) Boyan from New York, Carrie Anne (Weldon) West from Ohio, Adam Custer, Christopher Custer from Ohio; brothers-in-law, David (Rose) Custer, Harold Custer, and Wayne Elliott, all from Ohio. She also leaves behind her treasured great-grandchildren, Nathan, Brayden, Aryssa, and Alexis West from Ohio, Harper, Evelyn and Dominic Boyan from New York, and Sarah Custer from Ohio.
Shirley went to Spicer Demonstration School and Garfield High School. She was a proud graduate of the June class of 1950. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Akron, obtaining her Bachelor's and Master's degrees there. While attending college, she worked full time at Betty Jane Elementary and Ennis Junior High. Upon graduation she started her teaching career for Akron Public Schools at Maple Valley, Case, and Fairlawn Elementary (now Resnick). She then started teaching at first grade and remained there for the rest of her 30 year career.
She was proud to be Akron's Teacher of the Year 1996 and was delighted to share this experience with her students, friends, and staff at the school. Shirley loved teaching and helping her kids learn skills needed to be successful.
Shirley was a former member of the Portage Lakes Fitness Center and Firestone Park Prime Timers. She was a current member of Eastern Star Billow Chapter No 583.
At Shirley's request, there will be no calling hours, funeral, or memorial service. The burial will be at the convenience of the family at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Cremation has taken place.
