Albert L. Varner II, "AL", age 66 of Akron, Ohio, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones.
Al was born on June 15, 1957 in Akron, the son of the late Albert L. Varner I and Alice Jean (nee Rager) Main.
Al lived in the Akron area his whole life. Al was a talented mechanic with transmission building, being his specialty. Al worked at Waterloo Transmissions in the 1980's before opening his own shop, A.T.P.A. Transmissions in the 1990's. Al was known for his hard work ethic and quickly carved out a name for himself in the NE Ohio transmission world. Al had much success with A.T.P.A. Transmissions and passed the "wrench" on to his son in 2014. Al remained working side by side with his son at AJ's Transmissions until he became ill in January 2023.
Al was an avid deer hunter and fisherman. He liked to travel and go on cruises. He had a knack for anything with a motor or horsepower. Al raced sand drags for many years, went to NHRA races across the US and had many hot rods and motorcycles over the years. In his younger years, he enjoyed baseball, bowling and poker.
Al took great pride in his children and even more in his grandchildren. Al is survived by his children Tona DeLong and Albert L. Varner III (Renee); his grandchildren, Amour Stallworth and JJ Varner; his siblings, JR Reed (Liz) and Cathy Horvath (Dave); his canine companion, Peanut; and many extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his step-fathers, Walter Main and Jimmy Reed.
The family will receive friends and family on July 21, 2023 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Road, Akron, Ohio 44305 where a funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM, Pastor Randy Vandemark will celebrate Al's life.
Following all services, Al will be cremated.
