Alvin Randolph Covey

Alvin Randolph Covey, age 94, of Akron, died on Thursday, September 29, 2018 at Rose Lane Nursing Home, Massillon.
He was born on May 16, 1924 in Newport, Arkansas, the son of the late Hurkless and Dessie (nee Jones) Covey, and the husband of the late Ida (nee Donaldson) Covey.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in Northern Africa and Italy, and was a Bronze Star Recipient.
Alvin worked as a salesman most of life, but he also worked as a truck driver. He enjoyed playing games of any kind, but was a renowned expert at checkers, chess, and croquet.
Survivors include his two sons, Gordon A. (Tana) Covey of Akron and Jerry A. (Victoria) Covey of Coatesville, PA; six grandchildren, James Spoerndle, Cynthia Covey, Christopher Covey, Nathan (Christina) Covey, Jeffrey (Brigid) Covey, and Sarah Covey; nine great-grandchildren; and his sister, Kathleen Robinson.
Besides his parents and his wife of 58 years, Alvin was preceded in death by his children, Alvin Jr. and Roger, and Carol "Sue" Spoerndle; one grandson, Scott Spoerndle; and his siblings, Vaunetta Baird and Hurkless "Bob" Covey, Jr.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Road, Akron. His burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Gary Sinise Foundation, PO Box 368, Woodland Hills, California 91365, in support of veterans.
