Aretha G. Jackson, age 86, of Akron, passed away on Sunday March 3, 2024. She was born in Stevens Pottery, Georgia on November 9, 1937 to the late Cassie and Ada (Simmons) Grant. Aretha moved to the Akron area with her husband and small children in 1969.She enjoyed cooking and fishing and was always in the presence of her children and grandkids. She was a faithful member of Shelton Temple Prayer, COGIC.
The old saying is: "It takes a village to raise one child" But in the midst of that village always be a rock; a lampstand that anyone could stand on. Sister, Mother, Granny, Aunt, etc. was that one person who shined. She was the Jackson Childcare Agency; Green Thumb Gardener; Culinary Chief; Seamstress; Uber Driver; Teacher; Counselor; AJ Hair Salon; First National AGJ Bank of do You Have$$$??? J Sister, Mother, Granny, Aunt, etc. was a strong disciplinarian; and a great example of a wife/homemaker. She was our Virtuous Woman. She was that small light God used to keep the family united.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Felton Shropshire Jr. and second husband James Jackson; son Charles Grant; and sisters Lillie Mae Grant, Gladys G. Tucker, Roberta G. Myrick and Ruby Lee May; grandson Edward Turner; and cousin Jimmy Lee Simmons.
She is survived by sister Johnnie C. May; her children Barbara Turner, Felton Shropshire III, Mildred Shropshire, Willie (Shawn) Shropshire; Marguerite Jackson; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Calling hours are Monday March 18th 10:00 AM- 12 noon at Newcomer Funeral Home. Funeral services begin promptly at 12 noon with Pastor Tony Huggins Sr. officiating. Final resting place is Glendale Cemetery.
