Arthur L. Kaltenborn, Jr. was born in Oakdale, PA on October 12, 1913 to Arthur and Effie Bower Kaltenborn. He was the second of three children. His siblings, Ethel Kaltenborn Muntz and John D. Kaltenborn preceded him in death. Arthur graduated from Langley High School in Pittsburgh, PA and from the College of Wooster. After college he served a year in a Presbyterian Mission School in Bogota, Colombia. He returned as an instructor at The College of Wooster and attended Northwestern University in the summers. He served in the Army of the United States in the Second World War. As an infantry lieutenant, he was attached as squadron adjutant to the 124th Horse Calvary in Burma which helped open the Burma Road to Kunming, China. After that he was transferred to the Chinese Combat Command where he served as acting Adjutant General at the conclusion of the hostilities. He returned to his teaching at the College of Wooster and completed his Masters Degree at Northwestern University with a major in speech pathology and a minor in Theatre. In 1948 he took a position at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville to start a speech correction program. In 1950 he accepted an invitation to join the staff at the Kent State University Speech and Hearing clinic. He taught undergraduate courses there until his retirement in 1978. He was very active in the Presbyterian Church. He was an ordained Elder at the North Springfield Presbyterian Church in Akron. He served on many committees at the Church, Presbytery, and Synod levels. Most of his interests were in social justice issues. After his retirement he volunteered with the Akron City Health Department's AIDS Buddy Program and also the Portage County Hospice. He was a founding member of the Akron chapter of P-FLAG. He most recently was a volunteer at the Akron Area Pride Collective. Calling hours will be Thursday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. A funeral service will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at North Springfield Presbyterian Church, 671 Canton Rd., Akron. Interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
