On the evening of March 2, 2017, Audrey J. McCloskey, 89, peacefully slipped away surrounded in love by her daughters Barb and Judi.
An only child, Audrey Jean Roth was born in Canton, Ohio, to Theresa (Maurer) Roth and Stephen Roth on August 4, 1927. She attended Belle Stone and Gibbs Elementary Schools there.
In third grade, Audrey moved with her parents to Pittsburgh where her grandparents owned a tea room in Mt. Lebanon. Eventually the tea room became Roth's Restaurant where Audrey spent many happy hours each day learning to cook at her mother's side and helping guests.
Audrey attended Mt. Lebanon schools and was a standout soprano for three years in Mt. Lebanon High School's Triple Trio. The vocal group gave many performances in the Pittsburgh area and Audrey sang "Ave Maria" as a soloist with the Robert Shaw Choir at Stephen Foster Memorial Auditorium when she was a senior.
After graduating from Mt. Lebanon High School, Audrey returned to live in Canton. Majoring in Chemistry, she attended Bowling Green State University where she continued to sing in their choirs. Audrey's favorite job was when she worked for Canton's Timken Roller Bearing Company in their records department for five years and took part in the company's 50th anniversary celebration.
Audrey met her future husband, Leo McCloskey, while working at Timken and they were married on October 14, 1950. Barbara was soon born and Judith was born four years later and the family moved to Springfield Township where they lived for 48 years before moving to Tallmadge. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker for many years and participated in her daughters' school events as everything from room mother to Girl Scout "cookie mom" to band and choir parent leader and many more. Audrey returned to the working world as Assistant Treasurer for Springfield Local Schools and retired from the district after many successful years.
Audrey loved cooking, gardening, making wine, and sitting on her screened porches in the evenings after dinner. She loved and was devoted to her family and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and husband of 63 years. She is survived by daughters, Barbara Moore and Judith McCloskey (Dennis Crossen); granddaughter, Jillian (Jason) O'Connor; great granddaughter, Jaclynn LeeAnn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private interment will take place at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of Audrey's favorite charities which include Humane Society of Summit County, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
