Avalene "Em" Mason
Avalene "Em" Mason, 87, passed away September 16, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 28, 1924 to the late Moss and Bessie Hatfield, and raised in Hamden, WV where she was known as Emelene Hatfield. Em was the eldest of 13 children. She moved to Akron in 1945 where she worked at the Goodyear Hanger as a "Rosie the Riveter". Emelene was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 47 years, Russell Mason. Their home became a safe haven for countless family and friends coming to the Akron area for a new start. Their door was always open and welcome to everyone. Em was preceded in death by her daughter, Martha Whetzel; loving son-in-law, Herman Stone; brothers, Ray, Sherman, and Charles Hatfield; and sisters, Juanita Christian and Norma Justice. She is survived by her children, Patsy Stone, Greg Mason, Burl (Sandy) Mason, and Allen Mason; sisters, Maxine (William) Dillon, Shirley Dretzel, Nina (Jerry) Tenney, and Barbara (Edgar) Carter; brothers, Elbert (Joyce), Jack (Pat), and Moss Jr. (Sue) Hatfield; sisters-in-law, Frances and Wanda Hatfield; brother-in-law, Richard Justice; grandchildren, Dr. Donald (Marsha) Stone, Amanda (Bill) Williams, Shelia (Mike) Villers, Richard Whetzel, Barbie (Ed) Auvil, Burl Mason Jr., Joe (Brenda) Mason, and Joyce (Steve) Lambruno; extended grandchildren, K.C. Millard, Steve Stone, Archie Stone Jr., and Tammy (Chris) Dean; many great and great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to give a special thanks to Jason and Tammy Carter, Linda Brown and Jackie Ayers for their love and dedication. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, September 20, from 5 to 8 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, where a service will be held Wednesday, September 21, at 11 am with Pastor Rick Fuson officiating. Contributions may be made to The Hospice on Ridgewood. Her burial is to follow at Hillside Memorial Park.
