Bernard Jerome "Bernie" Harland, 88, of Akron, passed away on December 25, 2024. He was born on May 29, 1936 to the late Harley "Roy" and Loretta Harland.
In addition to his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by his wife Maryanne {Styer} Harland, daughter Rebecca Welsh, grandson Andrew Harland and siblings Francis, Genevieve, Joann and Kenneth.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie; daughter, Elizabeth (Edward) Plazak; sons Robert (Rebecca) and Bernard (Jeweldeen) Harland; step-children, Mark (Terri) Reese, Alisa (Paul) Shepherd, Anita (Dave) Stenglein and Matt Reese; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister Mary Louise Wohlwend.
Bernie worked for Reuther Mold for his entire career, and part time as a Summit County Sheriff Deputy for a number of years. In his free time, he loved to go camping, boating, fishing, fishing, and more fishing. Bernie made the best fried fish dinners, and enjoyed playing poker with his brothers, spending time relaxing at his cabin, and gambling at his favorite casinos.
Bernie's faith guided most of his activities and outreach. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, as well as a charter member of St. Matthew School. Bernie was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus and the St. Vincent de Paul Society (Outreach), and was involved with the Boy Scouts and several other organizations through the years.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd. Akron, OH 44305 on Thursday, January 2nd from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 3rd at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2580 Berne St. Akron 44312 with Father Michael Williamson officiating. Interment will follow the service at Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie's memory are suggested to St. Matthew Catholic Church, or the St. Matthew Outreach Program.
