Bert Hughes, 71, passed to the hands of our Lord March 13th, 2011. He was born and raised in Akron, Ohio July 24, 1939, and worked as a machinist in the rubber industry, retiring from Goodyear in 2001. An avid hunter and fisherman, Bert enjoyed spending time in the outdoors watching the birds with family and friends, sharing stories of the "one that got away" and evening campfires. Bert also loved going to bingo and auctions, then giving away his finds with a big smile to his family members. Preceded in death by his parents Earl and Gladys, brother, Paul and step son Russell Gorham, he is remembered fondly by his wife Helena "Joanne" (Burger), brothers Carl (Ruth), Robert (Darlene), Earl (Sylvia), brother-in-law Dr. Jerry R. (Gina) Burger, step children Robert (Roxanne) Gorham, Raymond (Sheila) Gorham, Tammy Garrett, and Roger (Karen) Gorham, grandchildren, Brian (Amber), Eric, Nikki (Dan), and Ashley Gorham, Kristen Stull, Joshua Garrett (Allie), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. The family would like to thank the Hospice of Summa, especially Marla, for all of their love and care. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 15, from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, where a service will be held Wednesday, March 16, at 1 pm with Pastor Jack Kozak officiating. Burial to follow at Hillside Memorial Park. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Summa in Bert's memory.
