Charles "Chuck" Hastings, 61, went home to be with the Lord on September 11, 2023. He was born on May 20, 1962, the son of Harry and Norma Hastings Walsh. Chuck was a 1980 graduate of Garfield High School in Akron. Thereafter, he attended Ohio Diesel Tech in Cleveland, from which he graduated in 1981. His first job as a diesel technician took him to the oil fields of New Mexico, where he spent two years repairing oil drilling equipment. While he enjoyed his time out west, he missed his family and friends in Ohio, so he returned home to put his skills to work in the trucking industry. He spent the majority of his working career with Schneider National, FedEx, and ODOT.
Chuck was a man of great faith and was an active member of The Chapel of Akron. He worked with various youth groups, including the high school ministry, the children's ministry, Boys Brigade, and Boys Battalion. He also volunteered with the church's neighborhood outreach basketball ministry for high school boys. Most recently, Chuck served with The Chapel's nursing home visitation team. Over the past two years he and his daughters, Abby and Jenny, enjoyed volunteering at Liberty Camp for Kids in Ravenna.
Chuck's favorite activities included riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, camping, and most of all, campfires. Above all else, though, he loved his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Hastings, stepfather, Regis Walsh, and brother Jack Goodwin.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Martha Hastings; daughters Abigail "Abby" Hastings and Jennifer "Jenny" Hastings; mother Norma Walsh; sister Lena Hastings; niece Amanda (Shawanakie) Peoples; nephew Justin Hastings; and many other beloved relatives, friends, and church family. All who knew him will miss his smile, laughter, and sense of humor. Words are inadequate to express the depth of that sentiment.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, September 23rd, from 11:00 to 12:00 pm at The Chapel of Akron (135 Fir Hill, Akron, 44304) where memorial services will take place at 12:00 pm with Tom Kot officiating. A reception will be held at the church thereafter.
