Charles Donley Shanks (Don)
Charles Donley Shanks (Don), age 75, passed away February 15, 2009 from complications of Picks Disease, a form of dementia. Don was born December 7, 1933 in Mannington, West Virginia. He joined the US Army in 1956 and served as a wheel mechanic in Germany. Don retired from Goodyear Tech Center after 40 years of service. He was a member of Goodyear Engineering and Fishing Club and Local 2 Union. Don enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing softball, and horseshoes. He was an avid bowler. He was very proud of the fact that he bowled ProAm and had 4 300 games in his time. He will always be remembered for his outgoing personality and sense of humor. Don and Gladys loved the outdoors and traveling, spending the last 15 years as snowbirds in Florida. Throughout their marriage they had visited all 50 states. They also spent a great deal of time camping, it was a true joy in their lives. This April, Don and Gladys would have celebrated 50 years of marriage. Don is survived by his loving wife, Gladys; children, Mike (Sue), Chuck, and Teresa (Mark) Gravesmill; grandchildren, Charles and Douglas Shanks, Natalie Madonio nee Shanks, Cory and Chad Gravesmill; great-grandchildren, Hailie Shanks and Anthony Madonio; sisters, Alice Goudy of Palm Harbor, FL, June Fagan of Jackson, AL, Elizabeth "Tat" Elekes and JoAnn "Jodi" Brooks of Akron, OH; brother-in-law, Edwin Snider of Akron, OH; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Don will be missed by his "little buddy" Chippy, his pet squirrel. Don was preceded in death by parents, Charles and Mona Shanks of Mannington, WV; brother, Robert Shanks; and sisters, Mary Robinson and Harriet Snider. Calling hours will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 2009 at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd, Akron, OH 44305, where a brief memorial service will be held Friday, February 20th at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Bob Fleming officiating. Burial at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 651 Newton St., Tallmadge, OH 44278-3221 or the American Diabetes Association.
