Clement Jay Chapman, 70, of Akron, passed away on January 10, 2023. He was born on October 27, 1952 to the late Clarence and Clementine {Britton} Chapman.
After his father passed in 1971, Clem lived with his Aunt Ramona Glasser, where he finished his high school years. He graduated from Norwayne High School in Creston, Ohio. Clem, some time after graduation, went to Texas to try out to be a jockey, as he was small in stature, but it wasn't for him.
He traveled to visit relatives in Florida and New Mexico, but ultimately settled in Ohio. Clem lived with his Aunt Bonnie {Grimm} and Uncle Melvin Britton (deceased 2016), and referred to them fondly as Mom and Dad. He worked at Mainstay Markets (Rittman and Doylestown, OH, now closed since 2003).
After his mother Clementine passed in April of 2003, Clem went to live with his sister Sandra Haller, who had moved to Indiana several years
earlier. Clem was a good brother to Sandra and helped care for her during her battle with cancer. Clem, after two years of trying, finally got his medical disability and went back to Ohio.
Clem and his sister Luwana resided for several years in the same senior complex. Clem enjoyed living there very much, attending costume parties. One year, he attended as Papa Smurf, where he even sported a blue face! On Saint Patrick's Day, Clem wore a green vest and top hat and spread his lucky charm to friends and neighbors. He was known for his funny wit. You sometimes could hear him giggle and snicker just before he pulled his prank or told you a joke. He would barely get the joke told, for laughing about it! He really loved making people laugh.
He never married, and most of the time, there was great distance between Uncle Clem and his extended family. Still, somehow, even the youngest of the grand nephews and nieces knew Uncle Clem.
Clem is preceded in death most recently by his mother and three sisters; Bonnie (Hair), Luwana (Woods), and Virginia Lee (Davis) better known as "Ginny." He was lonely for his brother John, who he hadn't seen in years and lives in Kentucky, but contact was not able to be made before his passing. He is remembered by his Nephews Michael and John Haller, Eric Owens, Frank Hair, and Shonn Chapman. He is remembered by nieces Robin (McCoy), Crystal (Matthews). Besides Bonnie Britton and her children (Matthew, Mark, Jodie especially); he has a cousin Georgiana Lake of Florida (with several of her children that knew Clem well.) Cousins Nita Worden (Addy, Washington), Kenneth Ruble (Arizona) that remember mostly Clem's childhood years but remember him well. Clement is survived by his older sister Sandra Haller (California) and brother, John Chapman (Kentucky). Nephew Eric Owens, Luwana's son, was living close by in the area with his wife Amy, tried to visit and see to his needs. For Clem in the last couple of years, Eric is about the only person he saw after going to live in Falls Village Nursing Home. The family wants to let the staff at Falls Village know that the care and day to day living there gave Clem a sense of caring and being loved by them.
Per Clement's wishes, cremation has taken place, and he will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Park at a later date. To leave a message for his family, please scroll below.
