Clyde D. Wilson

Clyde D. Wilson, 91, of Akron, passed away November 10, 2011. Clyde was born January 24, 1920 in Terre Haute, Indiana to the late Harry and Eva Wilson. Clyde graduated from the Ohio State School for the Deaf in Columbus, Ohio in 1941 where he played softball, basketball, and baseball. In 1940, Clyde founded the Tri-State Deaf Softball Association Tournament. From 1942 to 1944 he was the President of the Ohio State Deaf Softball Association. In 1944, Clyde founded the National Deaf Basketball Association Tournament and was captain of that year's championship team. He was the bowling captain for the following bowling teams: Firestone Silents, Deaf Citizens, and Bories Bowland Silents. He was secretary-treasurer for the Ohio Deaf Bowling Association for 19 years. In 1955, he was the all-star leftfielder (Akron Silents) in the Tri-State Deaf Softball Tournament. In 1967, he founded the Ohio Deaf Bowling Tournament Men and Women. In 1981 he founded Akron Club of the Deaf Mixed Bowling League. After retiring from Firestone Tire and Rubber with 36 years of service, Clyde taught American Sign Language to University of Akron students. He also wrote the book: Akron History of the Deaf. In 2010, Clyde was inducted into the Ohio Deaf Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie; wife, Mildred; son, Clyde "Jay" Jr.; grandsons, Christopher Roberts and Derrick Terrell; and brother, Ralph. He will be deeply missed by his children, Dorothy (Robert) Graham, Priscella (Fred) Metzler, Gloria (Al) Kusta, Windsor (Sue) Wilson, and Jerry Wilson; grandchildren, Travis (Kristin) Terrell, Nicole (Chris) Ball, Jacqueline Wilson, Jeremy Wilson, Carla Orman, Ronnie Orman Jr., and Roy Orman; great-grandchildren, Colton, Anthony, Chris, Nick, Christian, Nya, and Alexis Terrell, Noah Ball, Marjeigh Wilson, Autumn, Christian, and Corrinne Andres, Quinn and Dorothy Orman, Stephan and Ian Orman, Meghean and Mackenzie Greenwald. Visitation will be Sunday November 13 from 2-5 followed by a 5:00 p.m. funeral service at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. with John Sederwall interpreting the service. On Monday November 14, family and friends may meet at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. and form a procession to Rose Hill Burial Park for interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio School for the Deaf, 901 Sunbury Dr., Westerville, OH 43801 or Columbus Colony for the Deaf Assisted Living, 1105 Colony Dr., Westerville, OH 43081.
