Daniel Joseph McCarthy

Daniel Joseph McCarthy, Jr, 78, passed away Saturday morning, May 24, 2008, at the Hospice Care Center on Ridgewood Road, Akron, Ohio. He was born June 24, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late Daniel Joseph Sr. and Hellen McCarthy. He attended West High School in Cleveland, Ohio and later attended Baldwin Wallace College. He was married to LaRene Ann Clark in 1950 and graduated with a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1951. Daniel and LaRene raised four sons, Thomas James, Timothy John, Daniel William, and David Michael. Dr. Dan maintained Podiatric practices in Elkart, Indiana, Manistee and Bay City, Michigan, from the years 1951 to 1973. During that time he earned three more degrees: Master of Arts in Biology (Indiana University), Master of Christian Education (Grace Theological Seminary), and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Windsor, Canada. He taught Podiatric Medicine at The Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine and The Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine from 1976 to 1980. A winner of numerous award in medical research, Daniel was an internationally renown scholar in Podiatric Dermatology. He served as President of The American Podiatric Dermatological Association for many years. He was also named "Podiatric Practitioner of the Year" by The American Podiatric Association. Daniel later headed a Podiatric Section for the Baltimore Veterans' Administration Hospital where he trained many Podiatric Interns and Externs. He retired from the Veteran's Administration in 1996. Daniel is survived by his four sons, Thomas, Tim, Daniel, and David, as well as his five grandchildren, Daniel, Alannah, Siobhan, Jessica, and Matthew. A memorial service will follow at a time to be announced at First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 E. Market St, Akron.
