Darla Jean Guarino
Devoted mother Darla Jean Guarino (nee Lenk) passed away after long illness, surrounded by her children, on July 7, 2009. Her gentle nature, strength and humor even in illness were an inspiration to us all. Born in Akron on Feb. 2, 1941, Darla loved games, reading and movies when young. Darla was a top student at St. John's Parochial School. Highly creative and athletic, Darla played baseball and other sports. She was selected at age 14 to serve as May Queen and crowned the Virgin Mary. At Garfield High School, Darla was active on the cheerleading squad and was also honored by being selected for Homecoming Court. She graduated in 1959 and married Anthony Guarino.
Darla was preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Marie Lenk and son, Vincent Guarino. She will be loved and missed by children, Mark (Lisa), Christopher, Thomas, and Julie; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Anna, Edgeworth, and Cary; brother, Joseph Lenk, and sisters, Gloria Galloway and Marjorie Hollish. Calling hours will be Friday from 5 – 8 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. A funeral mass will be at St. John the Baptist Church on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Prayers will be said at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Michael Byzantine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.
