Our loved one, Deacon Darryl W. Hammett, 66, went home to be with his heavenly Father on December 20, 2020. He was born August 2, 1954 to his parents, George W. Jr. (deceased) and Meria (deceased) in Akron, Ohio. Darryl graduated from Central Hower High School and eventually worked for the University of Akron. In his spare time, Darryl spent many years working and volunteering for Archbishop Hoban High School because he loved working with youth.

Darryl was a life-long learner with a passion for good health and physical fitness. He took classes in massotherapy and holistic medicine to learn about ways to improve health through massage techniques. He used his knowledge and skills to assist athletes during his time as a fitness coach at Archbishop Hoban High School.

Darryl's interest in learning extended to other topics including archeology and the arts. As a talented artist, Darryl won several art awards during his time in school. He loved to share his artwork with others, especially his children and grandchildren. You would often find Darryl sketching or encouraging someone else to sketch, draw, or just create. He would teach and encourage anyone who wanted to learn.

In addition to his love of art and his family, Darryl loved and accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. Because of his determination to use his voice and talent for the Lord, Darryl sang in a number of choirs at his home church, Macedonia Baptist Church. He later became a member of the Gospel Wonders singing group. Notably, in 2009, he sang in Gospel Meets Symphony, and on March 26, 2017, received his certificate of ordination as a Deacon from the Macedonia Baptist Church.

Darryl preferred a detailed approach to life and was committed in whatever he strived to do. Darryl's artistic skills carried over to other interests such as being a photographer for various weddings and events, a meticulous and unique dresser with his own personal style, and a self-taught novice at playing the guitar. Darryl was a devoted father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle and friend. Our very kind and gentle giant will be sorely missed!

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 22 years, Vicky, daughter, Shantel Jordan (Arthur), and son, Darrell Hammett; step-children, Veronica Mick, Victor Mick (Barbara), and Jammie Mick (Kimberly); fourteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sister, Deborah Hammett Turner; brothers, George Hammett ll (companion Dixie Santee-deceased), and Carl Hammett (Alicia); brother-in-law, James R. Silcox, along with three aunts, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Darryl was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Larry D. Silcox, sister-in-law, Brenda Ritchey, and great-niece, LaNayja Turner.

His presence will be missed, but his influence will continue to be seen in the people who loved him.

The family will have a memorial ceremony at a later date.
