David Horace Ferguson, husband, and dad, peacefully departed on February 10, 2024, after a courageous prolonged illness. David was born in Clinton, South Carolina on December 15, 1930 to Godfrey Ferguson and Bertha (Young) Ferguson. He was the fifth child out of seven siblings. David received a football scholarship to attend Allen University at Columbia, SC in1949, later in 1951, he joined the Army during the Korean War as a paratrooper. David married Mary Alice Sturkey in 1952 and their union produced six children. David was an avid fisherman, who could spin a tale about "the one that got away", loved to read National Geographic Magazines, and "How to Fix and Repair" manuals. He was a great provider for his family and a wonderful father to his children.
David gave his life to the Lord at First Apostolic Faith Church in 1987 where he faithfully attended the Men's Sunday School, Bible Study and participated as a member of the Soldiers of the Cross. He loved the way the late Bishop Francis Smith would unfold the Word of God to understand its meaning.
David worked at Shulan's Jewelry Store during the 60's and 70's as a custodian in conjunction with working at the US Postal Service. He retired from Shulan's Jewelry in 1979 and from the US Postal Service in 1991 after 35 years. After retiring, David would spend his time gardening, growing vegetables, and making spicy "ChaCha", and taking pictures of his large family.
David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers William Andrew Ferguson, Thomas Ferguson and Bernard Ferguson; sisters Emma Mary Thompson, Rubye Judge and Connie Young; and daughter Angela (Ferguson) Burgess.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ferguson of 71 years; sons David H. Ferguson Jr., Norman (Josephine) Ferguson, Killeen, TX, Lenard Ferguson; daughters Kimberly Redman, Tammy (Jeffrey) Robinson, Waynesburg, OH. His grandchildren: Shununa, Shannon, Ahkee, Damara, Marquitta, Mignon, Laymoun, Ariene, Marcel, Ateela, Dranel, Pre'Terra, LayQuinn, Josiah, Sherah, Jeffrey, Justin, 28 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren. Special daughter Barbara Lee; favorite niece Marlena "DeeDee" Young of Jacksonville, FL; favorite nephew Cydrial Ferguson, Clinton, SC; host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd. Akron, OH 44305 on Sunday, February 18th from 2:00 p.m. until the Homegoing service begins at 3:30 p.m. with Pastor Gary Foreman and Elder Jeffrey Robinson officiating. Well-deserved military honors will be held privately for his family at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, where David will be laid to rest.
