Dean L. Meier
October 28, 1922 – April 21, 2022
Our beloved hero, father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle and friend took his final flight home on April 21, 2022.
Dean was born on October 28th, 1922 in Knox, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Ila (Somerville) and John Meier.
Growing up in and around Sligo, PA, Dean had four siblings, a sister, Virginia Davis (Ben), brothers, Paul Meier (Jackie), Merl (Marjorie) and a surviving younger brother, Keith Meier (Gerri deceased). All four brothers and brother-in-law served and survived WWII in various branches of service. Dean became a B17 bomber pilot after enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps at age 20. He flew 52 missions and 35 sorties. Dean once landed his "Flying Fortress" with only the skin left on one wing hanging from the frame. He counted 72 bullet holes upon inspecting of his aircraft. Dean told his daughters he felt, "God was with him that day".
When the war ended, he returned to Sligo, PA and married the beautiful young woman he had seen behind the soda fountain counter before he left for war. Her name was Louise Fulton of nearby Rimersburg, PA. They had a double wedding with his brother, Merl and his bride, Marjorie Graf.
Dean attended the University of Toledo before moving to Akron where he went to work for Firestone Tire & Rubber in 1947 and retired from their fire department in 1982 as a lieutenant. He continued his service to his country in the Army Air Force until his honorable discharge. Dean was an Honor Flight attendee to Washington D.C. and a Red Cross blood donor and gave the maximum amount.
Dean & Louise had three children, Randy (deceased in 1973), Robin & Susan. They were married until Louise's death in 1988.
In 1990, Dean married Rosemary Loughry. They were married for 31 years until her death in 2021.
Dean enjoyed coaching little league baseball in Ellet before moving to Green where he resided for 25 years. He also enjoyed traveling, bird watching, cross word puzzles, family get togethers, the Cleveland Indians and spending time in his winter home in Raymondsville, Texas. An avid golfer into his eighties, Dean was a former member of Firestone Country Club and once had a hole in one on the 6th hole of the north course. He traveled to every state in the US and to many countries abroad. Dean's love of travel lives through his children and grandchildren.
Dean leaves behind his daughters, Robin Brechbuhler Buta (John) of Alliance, Ohio, Susan Stewart (Craig) of Canal Fulton, Ohio, granddaughters, Kristin & Kelli Brechbuhler, and Kelli's fiancé, Josh Souders, all of Columbus, Ohio, and Jamie Stewart of Canal Fulton, Ohio.
Dean's burial with military honors at Hillside Memorial Park next to Louise and Randy has occurred.
Our kind, compassionate, wonderful hero from the Greatest Generation will be lovingly missed by his family and friends.
