William Dexter King, age 72, of New Franklin passed away on April 28, 2024. He was born July 21, 1951, to the late George Dexter and Lucy Nadine King. He graduated from Tallmadge High School class of 1969, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for football, basketball, and baseball. He earned his associate degree from Dawson Community College and his basketball team was recently inducted into the DCC Hall of Fame. After college, Dexter played baseball in the local Akron men's leagues and was inducted into the Greater Akron Baseball Hall of Fame. Dexter had a love for many other sports including bowling, golfing, fishing, and WWE wrestling. He was a die-hard sports fan and was always rooting for his Cleveland Browns, Guardians, Cavaliers, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Dexter was known for his green thumb and growing 500lb pumpkins. He loved Classic Rock music and could be found most Saturdays in the garage listening to Mr. Classic on the radio. Dexter worked for over 40 years in the Akron rubber industry, starting at BF Goodrich and retiring from Michelin Tire. Dexter was a family man and his greatest passion was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchilden. He enjoyed watching and coaching their sports teams, attending Special Olympics events, school events, and family vacations at the beach.
Dexter is survived by his wife Tammy King; children Benjamin Pruitt, April (Scott) Gurewitz, and Steven (Gabby) King; grandchildren Brooklynne, Presley, and Dexter "Dex;" siblings Charleen King, Georgianna Jameson, Kay King, and Gary King (Kathy Shiepe); and many awesome nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nephews Matthew Vanhorn, Chandler Vanhorn, and David Hoffman, and brothers-in-law Jim Jameson, Craig, and Mark Balnis.
Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Newcomer Funeral Home. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 4-6 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dexter's honor to
Ohio Special Olympics.
