Donald A. Dexter, 90, of Akron, passed away on May 29, 2021. Don was born in Akron on August 28, 1930 to the late Leon and Ethel Dexter. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. After returning from the service, Don joined the Akron Police Department. In 1963, he went to St. Louis, MO to learn how to train police dogs. He trained and was in charge of the very first police canine unit in Akron. Don retired from the APD in 1982. He owned and operated Portage Lakes Locksmith for several years before fully retiring in 2021.
Don was a member of the Portage Lakes Masonic Lodge.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 50 years, Susan (Miller) Dexter; children, Matthew (Grace), Michael (Lisa), Marilyn (Harold) Woolery of FL, and Mark; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne and sisters, Winifred Franz and Frances Griffin.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021 from 4-6 followed by a 6 p.m. memorial service at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. A private interment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park at a later date.
