Donald R. Moyers, Sr., 79, of Akron, passed away due to a long-term illness on August 18, 2008. Don was born on March 19, 1929 to a large Moyers' family and lived and worked in Akron all of his life. Early on, Don served as a volunteer firefighter in Tallmadge. He retired from Akron Public Schools as the Foreman of the Hardware Section of the Maintenance Division in 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Arabella Moyers; wives, Pearl Nichols, Jackie Bittner, and his beloved Virginia (Schockley) Moyers; sister Ynemia Hamilton; and brothers Edward, Junior, and Duane Moyers. He is survived by sons Michael (Michele) Moyers and Donald Moyers, Jr. of Akron; daughters Sheila (Dave) Plaugher , Deborah Wilson of Akron, Rebecca Brown of Akron, Alicia (Terry) Few of Akron; stepsons Tim Bittner of Tennessee, David Henderson of Akron, and Harold Schockley of Uniontown; stepdaughters Kim Pringle and Heidi Schockley of Akron; sisters Loretta and Madonna; brother Gordon (Carol) of Akron. Dad's "BIG" family also included 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be Thursday, 5-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m., Rev. Fleary Spurlock officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park.
