Today I stare out at a throne of ash. A throne my father used to sit upon and oversee his kingdom. His kingdom thrives, it's gardens beautiful, nature tamed in mom's name, a small paradise in his corner of the world . Sadly there will be no Phoenix emerging from the fire and ash, no story book happy ending. Mother Nature will take back hers; Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. The king is gone.
Today a great man passed away. As I held dad's hand I told him "It's ok, I got you" and he took his last breath. I really do think "I got him". He was a simple man with a simple plan. A single word adorned those knuckles in old faded ink- LOVE. Below that word a cross. I've come to understand that love was dad's cross to bear. As people came in droves and told their personal stories of how they knew dad, a picture became clear. His heart had no bounds. He fed neighborhood children, elderly, or anyone that stopped by. He loved everyone: Black, White, Asian, it didn't matter- his home was theirs. He wasn't a perfect man, but he was genuine. He was an avid Browns fan, a father, a son, a brother, a grandfather, a husband, and a nurturer of the neighborhood. He will be missed but not forgotten, because I get him. I'll see him in everything I do, he is me.
RIP Dad, my "Pops", Daddy-O
