Dorothy C. Slabaugh, 78, of Akron, passed away on March 31, 2020. Dorothy was born on February 12, 1942 in Akron, the daughter of the late Stanley Tywon and Victoria Kogut.
Dorothy was a graduate of Garfield High School. Proficient in shorthand, after graduation she worked at Firestone Bank (Later Bank One). She received an Associate Degree in Medical Assisting where she worked at the Uniontown Pharmacy, and then as Ward Clerk on the busiest ward at Barberton Citizens Hospital.
She was later hired by the City of Akron as a secretary in Plans and Permits and Building Inspection. She was promoted to Secretary II and then to Secretary III when she worked in the Purchasing Department. She later transferred to the Purchasing Storeroom and then transferred as one of the first people hired to the City of Akron 3-1-1 Call Center where she worked until retirement.
She enjoyed vacationing with Terry to the various cities where the USBC Nationals Bowling Tournaments were held where she occasionally bowled. Together with Terry, she cruised the eastern Caribbean, visited Niagra Falls and the wineries, visited the rainforest in Puerto Rico and watched the 4th of July fireworks in New Orleans on the paddle boat Natchez from the middle of the Mississippi River. Dorothy was an avid bowler, garnering numerous high game awards and league championships. She loved swimming and horseback riding. She always said she would have made a good cowgirl.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Oxley.
Survivors include fiancé Terry Phillips; brother, Edward (Debbie) Tywon in Alabama; daughter, Juliann (Marc) Hallman; son Christopher (Lacey) Slabaugh; grandchildren, Aaron, Ethan, Hailee, Hannah and Adyson; best friend Gloria (Tom) Marney; Denise (Brad), Rachel and Nathan Harris, Ruth Salmon, Gladys Shaffer and all of her numerous bowling partners, and other friends too numerous to mention.
Dorothy was best known for her outgoing, friendly personality and beautiful, ever-present smile. She was empathetic and always ready and willing to help those in need.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held by her family and friends at a later date.
