Edward John Hammerbacher Jr, who was born on April 5, 1943, peacefully passed away, after a long battle with Dementia, on April 18, 2023, at his residence at Greenfield in Copley Ohio at the age of 80. Ed previously lived in Hamden, CT, Washington DC, Meriden, CT, Dallas, TX, and Oak Ridge, TN. He is preceded in death by his wife, Gail Anderson Hammerbacher; his parents, Edward and Mary Hammerbacher; his brother, Robert Hammerbacher; his son-in-law, Walter Lounsbery; and his grandson, Edward George Dean.
He is survived by his daughters, Alyssa Hammer, Lisa Lounsbery and Stacy (Russell) Dean; and his grandchildren, Kelsey Bishop and Mark Dean.
Ed was born in Henderson, Kentucky in 1943. He was raised in Hamden, Connecticut, graduated from Hamden High School and attended Indiana Tech, graduating from the University of Connecticut. In 1967 he married, the love of his life, Gail Anderson, who he was happily married to for 51 years before her death in 2019. Ed was drafted into the Army and served during the Vietnam Conflict in Washington DC. They loved vacationing on the beach and going on cruises. Per Gail, the key to a happy marriage was a sense of humor and never going to bed angry - which Ed agreed with.
With his wife, Ed raised three independent and strong daughters. He was an avid golfer and Dallas Cowboys fan. On 9/11, Stacy remembers that Ed was at home watching videos of how to be understanding while the land line was ringing off the hook because Ed traveled extensively for Bank of America and everyone was worried. His response would be that he was fine in the house doing the "silly videos" (not exactly). This was also the man that would give up his seat on a flight so that a military person would get home. Ed retired from Bank of America in August 2011 after 29 years and spent his retirement either golfing or on a Caribbean cruise with Gail.
Ed had a good sense of humor, insisting he would never live in Ohio because of the snow after living in Dallas and Oakridge. Ed changed his mind in 2019 and he enjoyed seeing the snow and helping in the gardening at Greenfield in Ohio the last few years, much to the family's amazement. He was avid about taking care of his lawn at the house in Dallas. Everyone thought it looked like a golf course.
To those that knew Ed in the business world, he always called himself the last of the binary computer programmers, having worked in that field for years. To those that knew Ed in a personal world, he was a very caring friend and father. We shall all mourn his loss, acknowledge he is with Gail, on a beach in heaven and looking down on all of us.
We thank those special friends that helped to move Ed and Gail from Dallas to Oakridge. Without your help this would have been a lot harder and they loved what you did, Debi and Tim, Lisa and Don, Sharon and Brad, Logan and Raina.
We thank the staff at Greenfield in Oakridge, TN for their help with Ed.
We thank the staff at Greenfield in Copley, OH for their help with Ed over the year, Andrew, Terri, Vicki.
We finally thank the team with Southern Care Hospice.
