Edward J Matthews, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 3, 2004 at the Hospice Care Center.
Ed was born in Rochester, New York. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with honors and has been a lifelong resident in the Akron area. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 30 years of dedication. Ed was known as "the Whistling Mailman" in the Ellet area. Ed was a kind hearted man, caring and giving to others. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and he loved NASCAR and sports of all kinds. He had a host of many friends and will be missed very much by all that loved and knew him.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Sherri Brannon and his sister, Viola Dundon; Ed is survived by his daughter, Barbara Cole(Charlie); son-in-law,Rod Brannon; grandchildren, Scott Backus (Mandy), Doug Backus and Jennifer Apati; great-grandchildren, J.P and Justin Apati, Spencer Backus; many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-9 PM at Newcomer Farley Funeral Home, 131 N Canton Rd, where services will be held Thursday at 11 AM. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff members at Akron City Hospital department of special procedures and radiation, and a special thank you to the staff of Visiting Nurse Services and the Hospice Care Center for their kindness and loving care.
