Eleanor Mae Pry

Eleanor Pry, 90, of Akron, passed away on October 22, 2023. She was born in Springfield Township on December 27, 1932 and graduated from Ellet High School in 1951, where she was a majorette.

After graduating, Eleanor became a bookkeeper at Goodyear Bank. While Eleanor raised her family, she worked at Strickland's Frozen Custard, handing out cones to happy customers for almost 15 years. Home was where her heart was, though, and in 1984, she stayed home to spoil and help raise her grandkids.

Eleanor made a mean cherry pie, and loved to watch reality shows. She was an animal lover, especially her dogs from over the years. Her beloved Dachshund, Corky, pictured above, went missing one spring. On Mother's Day that year, in a rain storm, Eleanor heard whimpering from under the back porch, and there he was! Her animals and family alike always knew how loved they were, and they will miss her dearly.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her beloved husband and high school sweetheart Ray; parents James Barnes and Edna {Hurst} Barnes; brothers Jim and Robert Barnes; son-in-law Tom Mercer. She is survived by her loving children, Linda Mercer and Michael (Patricia) Pry; grandchildren, Kendall (Andy), Derek (Michelle), Megan, Julie, and Kelly; and great-grandsons, Vincent and Owen.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 4th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. A committal service will follow at Hillside Memorial Park, where Eleanor will be laid to rest with Ray.
