Elma H. Spurgeon
Elma H. Spurgeon, 86, passed away on December 5, 2007. She was born on March 30, 1921 in Oxford, WV to the late Okey and Alda Bush. Elma was a member of Springfield Baptist Church and worked as a teacher in West Virginia and Ohio for 48 years, retiring from Green Local Schools. After retirement, she volunteered at the Summit County Historical Society. Throughout her life, Elma was involved with many organizations. She was a member and former president of the ABWA. She had served as National president of Kappa Kappa Iota and president of Phi State Chapter, local Beta conclave. Elma was a former president of AAUW. She was a Martha Holding Jennings Scholar, former member of the Akron Women's City Club, a 35-year member of FOE #555 Ladies Auxiliary, and a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Dallas Kline Bush and Marion Lee Bush. Survivors include her beloved husband Glen C. of 46 years; son Don (Mona) Hayhurst; sister Edna Spurgeon; and numerous family members and friends. Calling hours will be Sunday, 2-5 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. where a funeral service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. Interment at HIllside Memorial Park.
