Elmo Davis Sr., the second child and eldest son of the late Welcom Elmo Davis and Allene Stewart Davis, was born on July 22, 1933, in Montezuma, Tennessee. On December 21, 2023, at the age of 90, Elmo made the peaceful transition from his remarkable earthly life.
In his youth, Elmo won many spelling bees and was also a skilled boxer with a mean left hook. Both of these accomplishments earned him the nickname "Champ." Elmo graduated from Chester County Training School where he studied ministry and agriculture farming. Elmo accepted Christ at an early age, and was added to the Lucyville Tennessee Church of Christ. In 1954, Elmo moved to Akron, Ohio, where he met his sweet Rosie Townsend. Soon after, they were married, and to this blessed union, four beautiful children – Beverly, Elmo Jr., Dwayne, and Regina – were born.
A great man of faith, Elmo continued to serve the Lord as a member of the Baird Street Church of Christ in Akron, Ohio, where he was ordained as an Elder. He continued as a faithful member, serving in whatever capacity was needed, whether that was leading Praise & Worship, scripture reading, or cleaning the church, until his health prevented him from attending.
Elmo was employed at Walgreens Drugstore, his brother-in-law's auto repair garage Wade Atlantic Services, Mammy's Kitchen, Yanko's Family Restaurant where he was employed for over 40 years, and Egg Castle-Grapevine Restaurant. He retired in 2006 at the age of 73 to be the caregiver for his youngest granddaughter Hannah. In addition to spending time with his family whom he loved dearly, Elmo's hobbies included gardening, canning, working on his Buick automobiles, and cooking his famous rice pilaf among his many other recipes.
Elmo is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Elton "Tip" Davis, Rufus Lee Davis, Donald Davis, and J.P. Davis; sisters Mary Davis Wade and Mildred Davis Bond; brothers-in-law Cleveland Wade Sr., John Bond, Vellie Townsend, and Robert Earl Townsend; sisters-in-law Jean Davis, Ann Spikenard, and Earlean Townsend. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 62 years Rosie Lee Davis, children Beverly (Lonnie) Davis-Shoates of Akron, OH; Elmo (Tina) Davis, Jr. of Delaware, OH, Dwayne (Cheryl) Davis of Groveport, Ohio, and Regina (Brian) Davis-Rogers of Akron, OH; grandchildren Mea, Lawrence, Quindel, Ariane, Jamelia, Londan, China, Janaya, Duane, Tempestt, Ridge, Creig, Trevon, Miles, and Hannah; great-grandchildren Janylah, Ja'Vaire, Jarmond Jr., Aliyah, Ny'Ziah, Anyla, Quindel, Myasia, Myair, Amari, Nasir, Haiyden, and Nova great-great-grandchildren Nyalyah, and Kyiaoni, sister Barbara (Joe) Reeves of Jackson, TN; sisters-in-law Marie Davis, Eva Davis, Estelle Davis, Ruthie Hammond, Dorothy Jackson, Willie Mae Townsend, Annette Gaines, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
