Elza "Red" Furbee
Elza "Red" Furbee, 96 years young, passed away January 9, 2007 in Winter Haven, Florida. Red was born in New Martinsville, WV and moved to Akron at the age of fifteen. He worked for East Ohio Gas Company for over forty years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, golf (which he played til age 95), hunting, and baseball. He loved his Cleveland Indians. In 1937, he bowled a perfect 300 game. Red and Blanche were founding members of Meade Avenue Christian Church and he was a current member of the Akron Baptist Temple, where he enjoyed the Golden Agers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Linkous Furbee; son, Raymond H. Furbee; sisters, Ethel, Nora, Eliza, and Ida; brother, Andy; and second wife, Norie Furbee. He is survived by his son, Walter B. Furbee; Mary E. Furbee, mother of granddaughters, Karen L. (Kim) Furbee and Elizabeth A. Furbee; daughter-in-law, Ruth M. Furbee. The three Amigos (Goodyear Metro Park walking buddies) are missing a member; remaining are Jim Marino and Dewey Stillwell. He also leaves special neighbors, Chuck, Nancy, Justin, Jennifer, Jeffery Keele, and Toni Marino. Red made friends wherever he went, he loved people and life, and many will miss him. Family and friends may call on Thursday, January 18 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., where funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNS Hospice.
