Emily M. Banar
Emily M. Banar, 87, of Akron, passed away July 2, 2010 at her residence. She was born September 9, 1922 in Broughton, PA. Emily graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Reading, Pennsylvania. She served as a Registered Nurse in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd Lt. during WWII, where she cared for survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor and WWII Prisoners of War. After WWII, she worked at the VA Hospital in Cleveland. Emily worked as an RN at Akron City Hospital while raising her 6 children. She later worked as an RN at Edwin Shaw Hospital and the General Tire and Rubber Co., retiring in 1982. She was married to Robert J. "Bob" Banar for over 60 years who died on May 10, 2010. Emily was a member of St. Matthew Parish for over 50 years where she served as the volunteer School Nurse, a Eucharistic Minister, and received The Spirit Award. She was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary Sanctuary Guild. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her mother, Susan; father, Joseph; beloved step-father, "Dad Bill"; daughter, Anne Marie; son, David Michael; brothers, Joseph, Andy, Pete, Frank, Mickey and Tommy; sisters, Ann, Helen and Betty. She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Banarhall (John), Elaine Banar, Kathleen Banar and Mariane Fountain (Rob); sons, Bob and Jim Banar (Mary); grandchildren, Justin, Jocelyn, Rachel, Christopher, Nicholas, John Jacob, Michael, Anna and Kirill; great-grandchildren, Meredith and Madyson; sister, Dorothy Dutko; and brother, Johnny Bush (Mary Ann). Calling hours will be Monday from 7 - 9 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron where prayers will be said Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Matthew Church beginning at 11:00 a.m. Fr. Michael Williamson will preside.
