Emma Pauline Gaskill, (nee Ridgway), age 99, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on September 2, 2023.
Emma was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, on January 8, 1924 to the late Russell and Edith (nee Jones) Ridgway.
While attending Morgantown High School she met her future husband, the late Harold Gaskill on a blind date. After graduation, she traveled to DeRidder, Louisiana, where Harold was stationed in the Army Air Force, to be married. They were married on February 13, 1943. When Harold was sent to England, she moved back to Morgantown to live with her parents. While living there she got a job working for the Westinghouse Corp. making parts for the military air planes.
After Harold was honorably discharged, they started their family and made their home in Fairmont, West Virginia. In 1955 they moved to Akron. She got a job working at Akron City Hospital and after 30 years of service, she retired.
She liked to keep up with current events especially the world news by watching David Muir every night. She also loved to watch the Cleveland Indians play ball
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Harold; an infant daughter, Janet Faye, son-in-law, Tony Leacoma; her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth "Libby" and Ralph Henry; and brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Ruby Ridgway.
Survivors include her three daughters, Pauline "Lynette" Leacoma, Janice (Jim) Herndon and Judy (Clyde) Smith; her neighbor, who was like a fourth daughter to her, Margie Heiselman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Brenda Sue and Don Skavinsky; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends mourn her loss.
Mom and dad loved to dance on Saturday nights at the Mogadore Moose, where they met life long friends, especially, Della Ward and Bunnie Brown.
Family and friends may visit at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Road, Akron, Ohio 44305 on Sunday, September 17, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM, where a memorial service will take place at 4:00 PM.
Her cremated remains will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Seville, Ohio, at a later date.
