Eulene Armstrong

Eulene Armstrong
Eulene Armstrong completed her life's journey on July 23, 2011. She was born January 4, 1916 on a farm near Bankston, Alabama. After graduating from high school she headed off to nursing school at South Highland Infirmary in Birmingham. "I knew I didn't want to teach and I refused to farm." In 1943 she enlisted in the Army Nursing Corps, where a doctor bet her "You'll be married in a year." "Missed it by a week" she would always joke. In March 1944 she did marry a handsome Army officer -Jim Armstrong- who would be her husband for 66 years. After leaving the Army she devoted herself to rehabbing Jim from his war wounds. She later worked as a charge nurse at City Hospital. She used to joke that Jim's job paid the bills but hers bought the luxuries. They lived in the same house in Ellet for 65 years. She was active in St. Matthew's Parish and Knights of Columbus. Her pies and cobblers were legendary at both locations. Over a long and happy marriage they raised two sons, Jim (wife Barbara) and Chuck (wife Judy). They enjoyed their four grandchildren Ellen, Scott, Marc, and Julie and in time three great-grandchildren Mayah, Jimmy, and Coral and one more due in January. She never quite lost her southern accent. She took up golf, bowling, bridge and gardening and never met a vegetable she didn't like. She spoke her last words Friday night. When told she was a great mother she opened her eyes and said clearly, "I know." One last thought belongs to them, "No tears please. We have had a long and happy life with much love from those we held most dear. Raise your glasses and say Well done old soldiers. Love to all." Family and friends may call on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. Prayers will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Matthew Church. Private interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, Gift Processing. PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250.
