Frances W. Wilkerson, 100, peacefully passed away at her home in Ellet Saturday, June 11, 2016, surrounded by family. Born in Java, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to Peter and Anna May Woodbridge Woodler, Frances was an elementary teacher at Hatton Elementary School in the Akron Public Schools from the day the school opened in 1957 until she retired 27 years later.
Frances graduated from Springfield High School, attended God's Bible School and College in Cincinnati, then earned a bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Akron and a master's in Education, Reading Specialization, from Kent State University.
A longtime member of The Haven of Rest Ladies' Auxiliary, she also spent many volunteer hours assembling mailings for Haven of Rest Ministries.
For many years, she taught Sunday School classes at Arlington Memorial Baptist Church, then was involved with The Suffield Fellowship and The Abundant Grace Ministries. Most recently she was an active member of Crossroads Bible Fellowship.
A supporter of many worldwide missions organizations and individuals, including Wycliffe Bible Translators, Operation Mobilization, missionaries in India, Austria and the Republic of Mali, West Africa.
Predeceased by Paul, her husband of more than 64 years, her sister Esther Bates and her oldest son Howard Wilkerson, Frances is survived by her sister, Louise Price, Portage Lakes; two sons Roger (Carol) Wilkerson, Portland, Oregon, and Lee (Claire) Wilkerson, Akron; grandsons Lewis (Hannah) Wilkerson, of Delta Junction, Alaska, and Glenn Wilkerson, Akron; great grandchildren, Carsen and Charlotte Wilkerson, Delta Junction, Alaska.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 15, 2016, 5-7:30 p.m. and Thursday June 16, 2016, 10- 11a.m. before the 11:00 a.m. memorial service at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Road with Rich Messenger and Lee Wilkerson officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven of Rest Ministries, P.O. Box 547, Akron, OH 44308.
