It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden death of our beloved husband, father and papa, Fred D. Sowers, 78, of Akron, Ohio on February 3, 2021. He was born in Barberton, Ohio and resided for most of his life in Akron.
Fred was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Bryan Neff; father, Fred Sowers Sr; sister, Sandra Simmons; and his brother, Michael Sowers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Nancy Sowers (Bevere); son, Frank Wahl (Tricia) from Brimfield; daughter, Shannon Cooke (Chris) from Taylors, SC; daughter, Sandy Brannon from Ft. Worth, TX; son, Fred Sowers III from Texas; granddaughter, Karlee Gibson; grandson, Aaron Wahl; granddaughter, Kaycee Gibson; grandson, Derek Rippey; granddaughter, Shayna Rippey; and 2 great-granddaughters, Ayreana Rippey and Harlynn Rippey. Also survived by brother-in-law, Neil Bevere (Nancy); sister-in-law, Beverly King; brother-in-law, Denny Simmons; half-sister, Pam Gargano; step sister, Sue Puleo; and step brother, Jim Johnson. Additionally, he is survived by many extended family members, friends and neighbors.
Fred proudly served in the US Army for 8 years and was a Vietnam Veteran. He retired from Adjustapost located in Norton, Ohio. He loved to listen to country music and watch Wheel of Fortune. He was a great dancer and met his wife in a jitterbug contest. Some of his favorite pastimes were coloring and following Cleveland sports. Above all, he loved his family. He will be dearly missed.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday February 9, 2021 at 11:00 am with funeral services following at 12:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Rd., Akron, Ohio 44305. Family and friends will then proceed to the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd., Seville, OH 44273 for a brief committal with military honors at 2:00 pm. Masks will be required and social distancing requested.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Akron Haven of Rest.
