Gary L. Lance, 83, of Ravenna, passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2023. He was born in Ivydale, West Virginia on September 25, 1939 to the late Herbie and Myrtle Lance. As a teenager, Gary's family moved to Bidwell, Ohio, where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army and honorably served in Germany before serving in Vietnam.
After leaving the service, Gary returned to West Virginia and reconnected with his childhood friend, Loretta Maude Douglas. They were married on January 27, 1968 and remained in love for 55 years. Gary took a job in Akron with Burger Iron Co. and he and Maude started their family. After several years, they returned to West Virginia, where Gary took a job with the Roane County School System. He retired after almost twenty years and returned once again to the Akron area. He spent thirteen years working for Newcomer Funeral Home before retiring for good.
Gary loved working in his garden, tending to his blackberry bushes and tomato vines. He loved attending church services and listening to southern gospel music. Most of all, he loved spending time with his beloved family.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by two infant brothers.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Loretta Maude Lance; daughter, Mindy Lance; sons, Troy (Mandi) Lance and Travis Lance (Anna); sister, Mary Young; brothers, Ray Lance and John (Bev) Lance; sisters-in-law, Juanita (Joe) Graves, Kathy Culberson, and Janet (Steve) Taylor; brothers-in-law, Art (Brenda) Douglas and David Douglas; grandchildren, Makaila, Trace, Gabriel, Lucas, Isaiah; great-granddaughter, Cecelia; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Traditions Hospice for all the excellent care given to Gary, as well as Jolene and Valerie from Village Caregivers for their loving care.
Visitation will be held on Thursday , March 9, 2023 from 9:30 am-11:30 am followed by an 11:30 am funeral service with Pastor Fred Webb officiating at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. Interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
