Gary D. Phillips
Gary D. Phillips, "Coach", 69, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009 under home hospice after a long battle with Achlasia and Esophageal cancer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, a member of The Sons of Herman, attended Alderson-Broaddus College, Akron University and was a graduate of Glenville State College. Gary retired from Green Local Schools having taught 30 years. His 20 year tenure as Head Baseball Coach netted him 7 Suburban League Championships. He also coached basketball at Green High School and Middle School. Gary was an avid golfer and achieved 6 holes in one and several "almosts". He was preceded in death by infant son, Michael David; his parents, William G. and Frances Shock Phillips; and in-laws, Bill and Gen Weaver. Gary is survived by wife, Martha; son, Barry; grandchildren, Gage and Lauren; sisters, Patricia Hood and Rebecca Beltran; in-laws, David and Peggy Weaver, Patricia and Bruce Berry, Ken and Stella Weaver and Terri Weaver; nieces and nephews; and his furry friend, Bear. Gary was a Methodist. As he requested, his remains will be cremated and there will be no services. Our thanks to Summa Home Care for their services to our family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Summa, 444 N. Main St., P.O. Box 2090, Akron, OH, 44398-6153 or a charity of your choice.
