Gene Claborn, 79, passed away on February 2, 2023. Born in New Castle, Indiana, to the late Eunice (nee Sell) and Wendall Claborn, he was a lifelong resident of the greater Akron area. An incredibly hard worker, Gene spent his life laboring for those he loved. Following his graduation from Revere High School, he joined the U.S. Marines, where he proudly served his country. He later retired from Goodyear, and his own successful company, Claborn Masonry, Inc.
Along with his soulmate, Betty, he spent most of his years dedicated to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. "Papa" could never say no and spent his time catering to their every desire. Whether he was coaching softball for Lauren and Madison or watching Jordyn and Alyssa from the sidelines, he rarely missed an event. First in the pick-up line, word search in hand, Papa loved being able to pick up the grands and make a McDonalds run.
If they weren't with the littles, they could always be found just across the border at the casino. Making regular "runs" to Mountaineer, he enjoyed spending his time waiting for that big win, sipping a Scotch.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Betty (Blankenship); sister Linda (Randy) Rodda; step-daughter Elizabeth "Lisa" (Chris) Rhoades; step-son Jeff (Misty) Franklin; beloved granddaughters Lauren Noble and Madison (Garrett) Patterson, Jordyn Rhoades, and Alyssa Franklin. He leaves behind great grandchildren Travis, Peyton, Greyson, and Sarah Frye and Knox Patterson (and Little P-arriving in May).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Dawn (Noble-Kovack).
In accordance with Gene's wishes, a private service has been held, and burial with military honors. The family will be hosting a celebration of his life at a later date.
