Genevieve Gipson

June 19, 1935 — February 21, 2023

Genevieve Gipson, RN, MEd RNC

As Creator & Director of the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants, Career Nurse Assistants' Programs Inc, & several other entities associated with Caregiver Support, she is internationally known for her work in geriatrics & health care.

Born to an immigrant mother who taught her to work hard & get by on little, & musician father who built various stringed instruments, they grew their own food & chickens and eked by during the depression. She was the of second of nine children so always took care of younger siblings. Genevieve played drums in the high school marching band & was a cheerleader. She once dyed her hair green for a football game & found out it doesn't wash out! Jeni, as she's been known her entire life, received a scholarship to Nurses Training from the old Peoples Hospital in Akron. She worked at the "Old Folk's Home" or "Poor Farm", Little Forest Nursing Home, and had her own program at Akron University. At some point she moved her program to work from home, and taught Train The Trainer programs & received grants to finance her work.

Jeni loved to travel & learned a lot about other people from her work in Jamaica and China. She loved Nurse Assistants & her life work was improving nursing homes by recognizing, empowering, & "celebrating nurse assistants, who do more than 90% of the hands-on care of patients." She has CNA groups in several countries, a history of speaking in Congress, an 18 page resume, and has boxes of awards she's been quietly honored with.

She loved puppies, fuzzy blankets, daisies, Monet, and singing soprano! She adored gardening, grandchildren, & bragging about her kids.

Jeni is survived by children Laura (Paul) McElroy, David Gipson, & Joan Gipson; 5 grandchildren Matt (Corey) McElroy, Mark (Ashley) McElroy, Melissa (Lance) Lostaglia, Raymond (Sarah) Gipson, & Andrew Gipson; 6 1/2 great grandchildren Teagan, Bryce, Kip, Alden, Taylor, Mary and one more on the way.

Also survived by brothers Richard Maddox & Charlie Maddox and dear sister Katherine Kasper who joined the heavenly choir a week later. Predeceased by parents Harry & Catherine Maddox, siblings Mary, Martha, Harry Jr, Jimmy, & Dorothy, sister-in-law Cathy & daughter-in-law Donna.

A Memorial Service will be announced later.
