Vietnam Veteran George Michael Arway Jr., 79, of Akron, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on May 2, 2023.
George is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Arway; his mother, Philomena (nee Brett) Arway; his father, George Arway Sr.; brother, Larry Arway; sister-in-law, Michelle Arway; daughter-in-law, Tari Tracy; and two nephews, Rick and Kevin Arway.
Left to cherish his memory is his brothers, Richard and Philip (Vickie) Arway; three children, Terri Walker, David Tracy and Kelli (Tony) Williams; extended step-son, Steve (Jill) Tracy and family; grandchildren, Brandi, Brittani, Tara, Mike, Sam and Justin; great-grandchildren, Tristin and Rhyder; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
George was a Navy MM3 and actively served on the USS Turner Joy and USS Cocopa from September 24, 1963 to October 2, 1967 when he was honorably discharged and later retired. He loved to tell stories about his time in Vietnam and was very proud to have served his country.
He was born on September 27, 1943 to George Sr. and Philomena (nee Brett) Arway. He grew up in Akron and graduated from Hoban High School. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he went to work as a Glazier for many years before he completed a 30 year career with General Motors.
George was the third of four boys and told lots of funny stories about him and his brothers when they were young. He loved anything to do with hunting and fishing and would go to Lake Erie with family and friends frequently to fish. He was an avid sports fan of the Cleveland Browns, Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, Notre Dame and Ohio State Football.
Funeral and Prayer Service will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, OH, on Thursday, May 11, 2023 with visitation from 10:30am to 12:30pm. A Prayer Service will follow at 12:30pm and burial immediately following at Hillside Cemetery, 1025 Canton Rd., Akron, OH, 44312.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any Veteran charity. One of George's favorites was Wounded Warriors.
