George E. Tatum
George E. Tatum, 84, of Akron, passed away March 16, 2008 at Akron City Hospital. He was born September 15, 1923 in Pender County, North Carolina to the late James A. & Addie G. (Sears) Tatum. George served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe and later worked as Tire Builder for General Tire & Rubber Co. He was a member of the American Legion 209, the Tallmadge Recreation Center and the General Tire Retirees Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Carl Tatum; sister, Eva; brothers, Taylor, Mel, Julius, Clarence, Ab and Chancy. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Alice M. (Jennings) Tatum; daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl & Michael Gessner; son, Mark A. Tatum; step-son, Richard L. Ingham; brother and sister-in-law, Marion & Naomi Tatum of Waltha NC; brother-in-law, Ronald Jennings and his wife, Kathy; sister-in-law, Blanche McMullen with his wife, Robert; and many, many beloved nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 - 7 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron where funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kenneth L. Frisbee officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park with Firestone V.F.W. 3383 providing military honors. The family wishes to thank all the many great people at the Tallmadge Recreation Center for their friendship and prayers in his time of need. Donations may be made to any Veteran's charity of your choice or the Humane Society of Greater Akron would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
