George W. Hagan, of Silver Lake, passed away on June 2, 2021, from complications from Covid-19.
He was born June 1, 1936, one of 9 children.
George graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1954, and then joined the Coast Guard. He was a First Class Petty Officer. Some of his duties included being in charge of shore-side navigation on the Delaware River. He was also in charge of base building and maintenance in Glauster, NJ.
After his service, he worked as a truck dispatcher and a labor contract negotiator for Akron Chicago Trucking. When Akron Chicago closed its doors, he worked at A.C.E. Freight as a diesel engine rebuilder, shop steward, and a labor contract negotiator. A.C.E. closed and he worked at P.I.E. Trucking as a diesel engine rebuilder and was chairman of the safety committee and a labor contract negotiator. While at P.I.E., George was chairman of their activities committee, which planned the social events for over 900 employees, including the yearly Christmas party at Cascade Plaza, which drew over 500 attendees. P.I.E. closed and he worked for Stow Schools as a purchasing agent in charge of transportation, a contract negotiator, and a chairman of the union bylaws committee.
George was a member of the Wadsworth Deer Hunters Club. He enjoyed 30 years of trips to the camp in Colorado, hunting deer and elk. George was also a member of the Ohio Sportsman's Club. He really enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren, Brianna and Brandon, especially watching Brianna play volleyball. George loved to scuba dive with his son, in Mexico, Hawaii, and Florida.
He also enjoyed his daughter's home cooked meals, and spending time with her and family. He was in Big Brothers for 10 years, and helped mentor an 8-year-old boy and his sisters. George enjoyed his second home in Florida with his longtime companion, Christiane. He loved to play euchre and was a member of the Barberton Moose Club, the Kent American Legion, Jednota Club, and the Elks Club.
He leaves behind the love of his life, Christiane; son, David Hagan; daughter, Debra "Debi" (Don) Lloyd; and his grandchildren, Brianna and Brandon (Cassie) Lloyd.
His siblings also survive, Frank Hagan, Rosie Shannon, Marie Wein and Kate (Greg) Caffarelli.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 PM, on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Road, Akron.
Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
Masks and Social Distancing will continue to be required to attend visitation and services.
