Our beloved patriarch, George Wallace Hammett, Jr., 93, went home to be with his heavenly Father on December 12, 2020. He was born in Akron, Ohio to his parents, George Sr. and Nettie Hammett. George attended Garfield High School, was a U.S. Army veteran, and with his wife, Meria, he owned George's Washer and Dryer Service. He also worked for the Akron Board of Education, and as a Boy Scout Master (Troop#205) he mentored and helped shape the lives of youth under his leadership. George was creative, and greatly enjoyed rebuilding houses, even houses for dogs and birds! Mechanically gifted, he would repair cars, build go carts with his sons, and was well known in the Akron area for the barbecue grills he made. A few of his favorite pastimes were watching news programs, National Geographic programs, and war documentaries. George loved spending time with his family, and was eager to help others.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Meria, his parents, 7 siblings and their spouses, and great- granddaughter, LaNayja Turner. He will be sadly missed by his devoted daughter and caregiver, Deborah Hammett Turner, and her dedicated daughters, Taniesha Knaff (Robert) and Larenda Walker (Myron), his children, George Hammett II (companion Dixie Santee- deceased), Carl Hammett (Alicia), and daughter-in-law, Vicky Hammett (Darryl-deceased); grandchildren, Juanita Santee, Rita Santee, Carl Hammett, Jr. (Brandi), Kara Hammett, Millicent Butts (Dennis Jr.), Kelby Hammett (Ben Walkuski), Darrell Hammett, and Shantel Jordan (Arthur); 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; sister, Margaret Cornelius (James-deceased), sisters-in law, Mary Hammett (James-deceased) and Marjorie Lewis (Preston Jr.-deceased) along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Interment with military honors will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. The family will have a memorial ceremony at a later date.
