George Herman Sawyers

George H. Sawyers, 95, of Tallmadge, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 24, 1929 to the late William and Ada Sawyers in Akron, Ohio.

On July 1, 1950, he married Rose. George and Rose lived in Tallmadge, Ohio, for most of their 72 years together.

George proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal with one star and the United Nations Service Medal.

George had many different titles but was a shipping foreman for Springwall Mattress before his retirement on May 3, 1991.

He enjoyed going fishing, hunting and bowling. He also spent a lot of time tending to the lawn and gardening. He loved his hunting dogs and his best buddy at the end, Scorch the cat.

George is survived by his loving daughter, Tonya (Jay Wenger) Sawyers; grandson, Keith (Amber Whipple); sisters-in-law, Carol Cardoni and Elsie Gelvin; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Dick, Rick and Bill.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by the love of his life, Rose; granddaughter, Jennifer; and brothers, Bill and Gene Sawyers.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Newcomer Funeral Home (131 North Canton Road, Akron, Ohio) on Monday, June 10, 2024 from 5-7pm. A graveside committal with military honors is scheduled for Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 12pm at Tallmadge Cemetery (35 Southwest Avenue, Tallmadge, OH 44278).
