Gerald Lynn Dies, 74, of Uniontown, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday October 21, 2018. A soldier standing ground until his captain called him home. Jerry was a testimony to all who knew and cared for him. His strength carried him through where most would have faltered.
Born October 18, 1944, in Akron, Ohio, to Velma Grace and Joseph Franklin Dies. Jerry is the youngest of five brothers, and also has two sisters. Growing up on a seven acre farm, Jerry was accustomed to hard work and perseverance, where his chores included tending garden, orchard, and farm animals.
A graduate of Springfield High School, class of 1963, Jerry played baseball, basketball, and dressed varsity his freshman year, where he lettered in football. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and swimming. While attending Hammel-Actual Business College to pursue an accounting degree, he was called to serve in the Ohio Army National Guard during the Vietnam Era. Jerry trained with the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Rucker, Alabama.
Over the years, Jerry worked at Vaughn Machine, Akron Standard Mold, Terex, Hygienic Dental, and eventually retired from Coltene/Whaledent as supervisor of the gutta purcha department with 30 years of distinguished and loyal service.
Jerry's membership at Millhelm Baptist Church for 30 years revolved around board participant, Sunday School Superintendent, and bus ministry bringing children to church (he was a bus kid himself). He also attended Temple Baptist, Grace Baptist, and most recently became a member of Community Baptist Temple. Jerry accepted Jesus Christ as his personal saviour at the age of 21. His prayer has always been for the salvation of all his family and loved ones.
Jerry was preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Velma Dies; brothers, William "Bill", Robert "Bob", and Ronald "Ronnie" Dies; nephew, Joey Dies. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Judy Dies, of 53+ years, as well as family members and many friends; brother, Joseph (Mardy) Dies; sisters, Donna (Roger) Bowman, and Judy (Richard) Schueller; sisters-in-law, Joy Dies, Theresa Dies, Jenny (Tim) Thomas, Jeanne (Larry) Hotchkiss; nieces and nephews, John, Pam, Tim, Kim, Denise "Ruthie", Robert, Greg, Kelly, Beth, Brittany, Karen, Allison, Melissa, Tommy, Carolyn, Timmy, Jeremy, Julie, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Jenna, and their spouses; as well as many great-nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
Family and friends may call on Sunday October 28, 2018, from 1pm to 3pm at Newcomer 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. Funeral services will be held Monday October 29, 2018, at 11am at Community Baptist Temple 1435 Kelly Ave Akron, with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Mark O'Donnell officiating. Interment and military honors to follow at Greenwood Cemetery 3809 Mogadore Rd., Mogadore.
