Greta Y. Shumate, age 85 of Akron, Ohio, died on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at her home.
She was born on December 6, 1932 in Greensburg, PA, the daughter of the late John and Muriel (nee McMichael) Nelson.
Greta was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, cooking, and her pets. She also liked nature, feeding the birds, she was a great proponent of saving any animal in need. She especially loved traveling with her husband to the Smokey Mountains and Cherokee, NC. Greta liked the slot machines to try her luck. Many words describe a person and these most describe Greta, loving, giving, selfless, compassionate, spunky, and she had a vivacious sense of humor! Her greatest joy was being with her family, Greta was truly the matriarch.
Survivors include her loving husband, James M. Shumate, whom she married on June 25, 1966; her children, Deborah (James) Slinger, Jon (Barb) Fancher, Erin Mullens, Cheri King, and Jay (Barbie) Shumate; her 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Other than her parents, Greta is preceded in death by her siblings, Audrey Roberts, Betty Playfair, Jack Neslon, Richard Neslon, and Ramona Lucas.
Memorial services will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Road, Akron, on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at 6:00 PM where Mr. Gary Smith, Certified Celebrant, will celebrate Greta's life.
Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 - 6:00 PM.
