Fighting against it to the last, Harry Perella passed away on Saturday June 1, 2019. He was a hard working, generous, unpredictable, funny, orderly, complicated, proud, and charming man. He died knowing that he had helped a lot of people.
Harry was born at St. Thomas Hospital on the fourth of July 1940. Harry spent the majority of his life on Akron's North Hill. He grew up on Lucille Ave, attended St. Martha grade school, and later was in the second graduating class of Hoban High in 1958. Before reaching 18, he convinced his father to sign the papers to allow him to enlist in the Marine Corps. Those three years may have been the happiest of his life. As a handsome young Italian American during peace time, Harry saw Italy, France, Spain, Turkey, Morocco, and Puerto Rico.
While still a kid, he was a caddy at Portage County Club, and a soda jerk at McKinney's drug store. Upon his discharge from the service, he worked at General Tire, Nickle's Bakery, and finally UPS, from where he retired after nearly 30 years of service.
At age 22, he met the sweetest girl on North Hill, Joy Wittek. They were engaged in two weeks, later marrying and have five children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
After retirement, Harry couldn't stay still, and had a series of jobs until, almost on a whim, he bought Larry's Main Entrance in West Akron. Family members still own and operate it today.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara (Barone) and Harry Perella, and his younger brother, Michael, a Marine and Vietnam veteran. To the end, Harry spoke with love of his maternal grandparents, Louis and Althea Barone, both proud Italian immigrants.
Those left with memories are his children, Alan (Charlotte), Michael (Tammy), Mark (Christine), Anthony (Jennifer) Perella, and Althea (Adam) Menough; grandchildren, Nichole (Joe) Kurtz, Michele (Andrew) Bennett, Brendan and Maxwell Quine, Anthony C. Perella, and Jonah, Forrest and Tylar Menough; great-grandchildren, Owen and Danny Kurtz, and Dorian Menough; his former wife, Joy; and many friends and family.
Cremation has taken place and a ceremony of his life will be announced at a later date.
