Helen D. Gilbert
Helen D. Gilbert, 84, of Ravenna, passed away on July 2, 2009. Helen was a quiet, pretty, small town girl who was once voted pageant queen of her hometown. There she married her husband of 63 years, a young WWII Airman. She endured the Great Depression and worked through the war as an elevator operator. Mom raised her five children through some difficult times in sacrifice for them. She assisted her husband with their family business and was a hospital volunteer. She and dad were members of the First Christian Church of Kent. The two of them were long time members of the Ravenna Boat Club where they enjoyed camping in their motor home and traveled much of the country. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom was a gentle and grateful lady who looked forward every year to being a fan of the Cleveland Indians. We would like to thank Akron City Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the kind, dignified care of our sweet mom. Preceded in death by her husband Glen A. Gilbert; sons Robert L. and Edward A.; and sister Ardith. Survivors include daughters Janice (Rod) Ebie and Linda Gilbert; son Glen K. (Cherie) Gilbert; brother Herbert Dunkerton; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and special friend Agnes Bellar. Calling hours will be Monday, 5-7 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. Akron, OH 44305, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Interment at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua. Memorials may be made to Akron City Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
