Herbert Wilson Lewis
Herbert Wilson Lewis passed from this life to the life eternal on March 6th, 2010 at age 86. Born in Akron, Ohio, Herbert graduated from Ellet High School in 1941.
He joined the Navy on January 19, 1943 serving in World War II as an electrician on the submarine, Bluegill, SS242 until November 20, 1945. He was employed by the United States Postal Service beginning in his high school years until retiring as a Superintendent.
As a fifty-year member of North Springfield Presbyterian Church, Herb was a long-time elder serving the church in numerous ways including teacher, treasurer and clerk of session. His broad interests led him to serve with the Red Cross Bloodmobile, a 6500 hour volunteer service with Edwin Shaw Hospital, member and officer of Southeast Summit Kiwanis, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Ellet Alumni Association, and North Eastern Submarine Veterans. Herb was an avid fan of the Akron Racers Professional Softball Team and National Pro Fastpitch.
Herb is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maxine (Reif); daughter, Laurie Lewis; granddaughter, Jenifer Statler. He was preceded in death by sons, Joel Lewis and Stephen Lewis.
A private burial will be held at Hillside Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at North Springfield Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Janet Lowery officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel Fund, North Springfield Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 6347, Akron OH 44312.
