Ira J. Mollohan

Ira J. (Sam) Mollohan
Ira J. (Sam) Mollohan, 69, died Friday, January 2, 2009 at Akron City Hospital. Ira was born in West Virginia on March 20, 1939. He moved to the Akron area as a child with his family. Ira lived a full and happy life. He was a generous, caring man, always helping others, and was deeply respected by all who knew him. He could build or fix anything, and created beautiful metalwork knives and hummingbird statues. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Janice (Teeling). Ira and Janice were deeply devoted to each other and loved just being together, time with their family and pets, throwing parties for friends and family, and travel. Ira was a proud member of the Local 84 Asbestos Workers Union and retired in 1995 after 38 years. He leaves behind many good friends and follows many others who preceded him in death from the Asbestos Workers community. Ira and his wife Janice served as foster parents in Portage and Summit County for 15 years. He was the founding president of the Portage County Foster Parents Association. During this time they provided a home to over 50 children in need. Ira was deeply proud of his own five children: Gary (Gerrie), Cheryl (Al LeCount), Kevin (Barb), Cara (Jeff Cumberlidge), Randy (Sandra), and of special son, Tony (Kelly) Williams. Ira was a man of many passions: he loved to travel, he and Janice spent many winters in the sun in Phoenix with Kevin and his family. Ira loved making pizzas and cooking in the kitchen at Anzio's Restaurant. They also made numerous trips to Reno to be with Carrie and her family where Ira would spend hours and hours at a blackjack table, sometimes winning but always having fun. Ira lived to hunt. He made numerous hunting trips with Cheryl and her husband Al in Arizona, and loved to hunt white tails and wild turkey on Cheryl and Al's property in southeastern Ohio. Ira and Cheryl also made four trips to Labrador, Canada to hunt caribou, moose, black bears, and partridges with dear friends, Tony and Lidija Chubbs. Family was everything to Ira. He greatly enjoyed time with his grandchildren: Matthew (Christina), Jason (Jessica), Amanda (C.C. Penrod), Casey, Kailee, Grace, and Ryan, and his great grandchildren, Trent, Dante, Chloe, Jayden, and Delaney. Ira was preceded in death by his mother, Alma (Postalwait) and father, Ira, sister, Frances, brothers, Raymond, Perry, Albert (Janice), and leaves behind sister, Sybil (Ted) and brothers, Robert, Frank (Marliss), and Ronald (Pat), and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. Ken Wells, Ira's personal physician and dear family friend, and DSI Summit Renal Group. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 6th from 11 1 followed by a 1 p.m. funeral service officiated by Rev. Judy Carter Shaffer. Interment at Greentown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pet Guards Animal Shelter, 950 Hardy Rd., Akron, OH 44313.
